Honestly man, I wouldn't take that quote as anything more than the Republicans pointing and saying: "OMG, can you BELIEVE what that Obama kid is doing? We would NEVER have taken it THAT far, nope, not us, not ever!"

Except they totally would have and we all fucking know it. Just another case of one side struggling to make the other look bad, without realizing that from the outside they both look like a couple of Worm-Riddled Wildebeest Turds.

Which is, in a way, a reason the US is better off with a Republican over a Democrat IFF their policies and actions are about the same anyway. People will actually resist a Republican, and protest, and call out the things they do. That gets buried if a Democrat does it.

While I think you're definitely onto something, I think you blew your own point with the racists/extremist/nut thing. The reason Obama gets away with as much as he does isn't because he's black or anything like that. It's because he has an unbelievable level of charisma. Bush had charisma in his own way, but in a very different way than Obama who could probably manage to sell a cup of water to a drowning man. I, even as a certainly left leaning individual, have grown to despise Obama yet watching his speeches I am still moved. The only thing that keeps me based in reality is focusing on what he's actually done instead of whatever [highly persuasive] lies comes out of his lips. The man can talk and in our political system that's 90% of the battle to being able to do whatever you want.

he said they couldn't get away with doing it.

Bullshit. Bush started the Patriot Act and most of Obama's expansions on the program were a natural growth built on what Bush put in place. Two terms of a Republican would have come to the exact same result.

When you say that anyone who criticize the US president is instant branded a racist or an extremist, I kind of expect a source of some sort. Some evidence? Fox News seems to be getting away with criticizing Obama's presidency just fine.

It's like the world's richest, most powerful children squabbling. Sad, really.

Remember, the guys who WROTE the Patriot Act, asked for it to be repealed because it was "being used for things it was never intended for."

And we're certain that wasn't just a ploy to make themselves look better by comparison?

I'm sorry, maybe you feel these people deserve the benefit of the doubt, but I don't. As far as I'm concerned it's more likely to be skullduggery than sincerity.

But they didn't say they wouldn't try, just said they wouldn't get away with it.

I don't doubt they would have tried but I also think they're correct is saying they would not have gotten away with it. Plenty of reasons, some justified some not.
