But what if it’s not a phobia and just a general dislike? The over use of phobia is destructive to language and gives idiots more power.

Newspeak. Homophobia means anything between "killing a homo because he's a homo" and "something a homo doesn't want to hear". It's intentionally as undefined and bubblegum-like as possible.

There's an old joke about anti-semtiism that seems apropos for people to understand what actually has happened and explain what will happen.

"Anti-semitism used to mean someone who didn't like Jews, now it's someone Jews don't like."

It's a far more accurate description of reality than most would like to admit.

Phobia isn’t just a fear, it’s like having a full blown panic attack when exposed to their trigger. That’s how I found out that a friend was afraid of spiders. I was watching the Hobbit movie and a scene with spiders came up. Turns out she has a phobia, she ran screaming from the room. From a picture of CGI spiders on the television.
