Norwegian here. IMO this has nothing to do with homogenous ethnicities, and everything to do with the attitude of the cops. In Scandinavia, the police defuse the situation. They're basically social workers, and because they're unarmed, the people they deal with are less likely to feel the need to defend themselves. Meanwhile, my impression of US cops is that of rootin, tooting cowboys who think they're on the afghan front-lines ...

For comparison, here are some swedish cops defusing a situation in the NY subway:

Exactly, it's a cultural thing. In America the solution to everything is violence, most other first world countries understand that de escalation techniques are far superior to brute force.

When a population fears its police force and its police fear fears the population, bad things happen....a lot.

Then combine the fact that everyone has/can have acess to a gun very easily and suddenly a lot of their violent crime statistics make sense.

Stubborn Americans and their guns.

Nah. I'm pretty sure that racial diversity and number of deaths by cops are correlated.

See these two maps for reference:

American here and the reason the cops are suspicious is because America isn't homogeneous so when you have a white cop pulling over a car with a black guy, tinted windows, he has a fitted cap on, talks in slang, or acts confrontational with shit like blowing smoke at an officer.... well..... they don't like that. The issue is white cops want black people to act like WASPs. They view anyone that doesn't act like a white person to be "ghetto" and trash. Because the person is now viewed as ghetto, the cops are now going to view them as a potential criminal and will treat them accordingly.

The issue is that America isn't homogeneous and different races have vastly different cultures and what is deemed acceptable behavior.

319 million in America 5.1 million in Norway

America has around 62.5 times more population than Norway.

So 1 day of killing by police in USA should be roughly the same as 62.5 days in Norway. 10 years is around 3650 days (ignore leap years)

So 3650 / 62.5 gives 58.4. So you could say American cops are on average, 58 times more likely to kill someone than Norwegian cops. That's a huge difference!

just to show everyone the other side of this that's rarely if ever shown

Law Enforcement Officers Assaulted From 2003–2012

  • total assaults 581,239

  • With Firearms 21,379

that's roughly 2,375 cops attacked with firearms every year

From 2003-2012 _ 535 _ law enforcement officers were feloniously killed.

i guaranty you that cops in europe are not being killed and attacked with firearms anywhere close to these numbers

USA leads the world in only two categories I believe (someone correct me if wrong):

  1. Prison Population
  2. Death by police

Too bad mexico overtook us in obesity because that would make this a trio of shitty things to lead the world in.

Please list some relevant statistics, I could go on and on about how china has the most number of people but that doesn't make them the best.

Also, let's talk about how far we fall down on important things like education, health care, etc please not vidya game markets.

This is something I've been dreading. The idea that innocent people are going to start arming themselves in case they get stopped by a cop. Even though the media attention makes it seem like cops are systematically shooting or otherwise killing black people for minor offenses, I know that's not what's going on, but having these reports day after day.... gives it that feel. One could argue that a black person being stopped by a cop fears for their life, and if they shot the officer, it was self-defense. That would not hold in any court, but I can imagine some people thinking and feeling that way. There is no way that this can end well, unless the police clean up their act, use body cams for every interaction with the public, and stop being so trigger happy, and prevent deaths in police vehicles and jails. Particularly damning is that it seems like almost every time one of these things happen, the police report is grossly inaccurate, which calls into question the integrity of police officers.

And one of the world leaders in gun ownership,

Norway have a lot of guns. Of 2.2 million households, 1.3 million have guns.

But it is mainly hunting rifles, and they are seldom used in crimes.

If you want numbers with meaning, police kill more Americans per capita not because our police are particularly untrained or much more blood thirsty, but because we're systemically far more authoritarian. Our police are only slightly less competent, but they have vastly more interactions with the public when you consider that you have 40% chance of having your life ruined by them before you turn 23..

What's more telling is our per capita incarceration rates compared to other developed countries. We're the leading police state by a wide margin with more prisoners by percentage, or even just raw numbers, than china. We like to throw stones at authoritarian regimes like Turkey (179/100k), or countries with corrupt police like Poland (217/100k) or Mexico (210/100k), but we ignore that we're already 330% worse than even the next worst at 710/100k domestically.

Shark attacks are a low risk if you're not bleeding in a school of them.
