Was about to click the video link, but then I thought about it for a second and I think I guessed what it is. Gotta say I am pretty proud of myself, although I could still be totally wrong sp.

akto until he finds people to fund the site.

It's probably difficult finding people to invest in a site that is pro-free speech, anti-censorship, and anit-advertising. How the fuck would this site be profitable?

I have no fucking clue honestly. Maybe if they sponsored the site and on their own pages be able to say, "We support free speech at Voat.co"

How do you turn a profit off of this site without becoming Digg, Facebook, or Reddit?

I hope people understand how important and correct what you are saying is. The same people who turned reddit into a shithole are almost certainly the people who are supporting the ongoing DDoS attacks on Voat and are responsible for having PayPal ban Voat. Neither of these things would have happened if there weren't people with an interest in keeping people locked into the site that they have already overrun. But when Voat gets big enough they'll show up here and do their best to make sure this site becomes just as toxic.

But I hate that toxicity. Is there anything we can do to avoid that?

Don't forget, the bigger it gets the more idiots it will attract. It could turn into the cesspool of the internet

Let reddit be the bigger messier shittier place. We'd much rather be a smaller more influential better place.

How is that possible with Voat being invite only? Someone give me an education?

Visits don't require registration.

Visitors to the site still count as site hits and web traffic. It means more people are actually visiting and browsing this site. Non-members can browse pretty much everything on this site, they're just not allowed to vote, comment or subscribe to anything.

Not to mention millions in investment. $50 millions just for the latest batch http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/30/6874353/reddit-50-million-funding-give-users-10-percent-stock-equity

Ummmmmmm... I'm pretty sure Voat donations haven't reached their first million just yet.....

/s for those of you who didn't understand.

When you make your sarcasm superfluous and non referential, don't be surprised that they don't pick up on it. But tell yourself that it's the other peoples' fault if that makes you feel better about it.

One of the most important implications of this, as growth trends upwards (maybe/hopefully) is the increasing cost of running the site. I really, really hope that the admins will soon find a simpler way for us the users to give money directly to Voat.

I'm aware of the bitcoin route and I really feel bad for not being able to contribute yet. I've been too busy recently and haven't had the chance to spend the time to look into it closely. I wish there's a bank account I can just do a direct transfer online and I'm sure there are many of us out there in the same boat :p

I started a kickstarter but I haven't heard anything back from the admins as far as a way to link it to them.

well all crowd funding sites kicked them off for hosting "pornography" and whatever the fuck else. or to clarify, "charging for pornographic services" which is complete horseshit because you can view the porn here for free.

Funny thing is, Voat's paypal was suspended for violating that rule, but reddit hosts that same, if not worse content, and their paypal is still active.

The Hypocrisy.... oh the hypocrisy....

If the Voat owners would simply provide a donate button on the front page, I guarantee they will take in a huge cash injection.

They could do a capital raising event.

In case you don't know, Voat used to accept donation via Paypal but that shit company being what it is, they blocked the funds raised - not sure if it's been resolved now. Good thing I didn't donate through that but yeah, I agree with you and hopefully Voat can come up with a better alternative soon.

And what payment methods would they accept? PayPal, which already confiscated previous donations? Bitcoin, which the average user has no clue how to do? Something else?

I saw a post a few weeks ago pointing out they hadn't touched their bitcoin account... Can anybody tell me if that's still the case?
