Ah, well, I'm one of the people who says that. The only reason I can see someone being homophobic is if they're afraid that being exposed to homosexuality will make them question their own sexuality and they're so insecure that scares them and/or they're brainwashed by religion to hate anyone the church leadership tells them to.
I'd love to hear a reasoned/rational counter-argument to that if you have one, it might help me understand some of the people in my family.
A lot of men want very badly to be masculine. In our culture, one of the most effeminate things possible for a man to do is be interested in other men. It's considered a core masculine trait to want/have a beautiful woman.
That doesn't explain why they'd hate others who are less masculine than them. If anything, the logical behavior would be to encourage other males to become more feminine as this would decrease competition.
