Basically not too different from chickens establishing a pecking order. The topped rank chicken will literally peck at (bully) lower ranked chickens.

All science is correlation and causation. If a theory is correlated with reality the theory can be confirmed.

Correlation may not equal causation. But at the same time, that's exactly how science works.
