I always try to tell people this. All good lies have some truth to them, that's what makes them so believable.

You brought up the reason for this unknowingly...believable. Don't belief anything, because you don't have to believe for truth to exist. In nature belief is a survival reaction towards that which is unknown, and which we perceive as a threat; like for example your first lightning storm. First you believe it will harm you, which is then automatically followed by curiosity about it, which ultimately leads to knowledge. Once you have the knowledge, you don't require belief anymore. The path from belief to knowledge is called adaptation and it's the means for survival, and holding on to belief is called blind faith, which religions even call out, while ignoring the unquestionable blind faith in a deity.

The only fundamental truth in this ecosystem are the laws of nature, who govern all existence, and a few predator realized that if you make people believe, they will not adapt anymore, which makes them easy prey. Religions are population control dogmas that use deities to hide the laws of nature, by exchanging the path of knowledge (adaptation) with blind faith (trust) in a new set of rules (the laws of men) given to you by those who want to control mankind.
