The use of the word "platforms" suggests that, although the US did not commit to this provision on the government level, social media platforms have committed on the private level.

Good points all around. If they can get the institutions to sign on board with this along with social media, support for free speech among younger people could be seen as a problem to them.

Protesting does absolutely nothing if the media isn't on your side. It's a way to generate headlines and viral images. Nothing more. If you're not chosen by the elite, your options are violence or death. Sad but true.
