When I was taking my CHL class the instructor said if an assailant is closer than 25' and has a knife while your gun is holstered, run! Even if you don't mess up the draw (which is hard because you've got a crazed motherfucker with a knife running at you) you can't get it out in time.

Your instructor is right. You need to run and open up distance while drawing your firearm so that if they give chase you can defend yourself.
Tueller Drills demonstrate that.

I think the idea of "rush a gun, run from a knife" isn't that the knife is more dangerous, it's that you CAN run from a knife.
