I doubt they could handle many of the usernames here anyway, too much class and so much that could be misunderstood or taken out of context.

I was late to the game, but really glad I managed to get in before they closed it up. It's good to see that the site is getting so much positive attention.

I just imagine all the faces of those who now want to jump ship and leave Reddit. They go all "VOAT ON TIME MAGAZINE!" and they flock here and BAM! Invite only.

Oh the frustration. Oh the anger. Fantastic.

Here's to hoping that the "invite only" creates a form of Streisand Effect, and it blows up even more. Or perhaps a better analogy would be at an exclusive nightclub; "the velvet rope effect"...

*edit: added jpg for how I imagine the "velvet voat effect"....

I'm surprised that this article didn't mentioned Pao's gender. This article had a pretty neutral tone. I'm impressed. Time can still write some good articles.

Pretty surprising. In my experience the Times seldom spends more than a "NY minute" researching any topic outside their traditional forum.

Good morning. In less than an hour, Voaters from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest internet battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the 21st of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the 21st of July will no longer be known as a regular American day, but as the day VOAT declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate the time we were on TIME!

I like that Voat is smaller and we are able to share this moments together and see it grow, but I don't think we want to be re**t, it was fun to see the endless comments, but there was an emptiness in that. So let's enjoy Voat for what it is right now a place for friends to dialogue and refuge for those who care that you have an opinion even if we don't agree.

[–] GeorgePBurdell 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Slashdot and usenet were awesome. Stuff stayed in focus. Slashdot only posted 10-15 articles per day, so comment threads went pretty deep. Post digg comment threads went to heck, you reply to rebut and things have moved on.

Get off my lawn!

[–] beijingsteamer 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Yes, when you can have a dialogue, it makes it feel worthwhile and negates the emptiness.

A place where people that are for free speech, that believe in the rights of others to have different opinions and are aware of the dangers of censorship and trying to silence unpopular opinions. Surely, this is where trolls come to troll people!

0

[–] Cybersoldier8 0 points 48 points (+48|-0) ago

It will, for a time. None of these sites will ever permanently be free speech platforms. As more and more users flee reddit and come here, eventually the quality and amount of posts on reddit will decline. By then, the only people still left using reddit will be the SJWs. They will eventually realize that the content on reddit has gone to shit, and then they will come here. They will also bring their awful toxic ideas that ruined reddit with them, and they will destroy Voat, just as they destroyed reddit.

I give Voat maybe 5, 6 years tops, before this place is flooded with SJWs and we all have to move on again. The cycle never stops.

[–] woozle_wuzzle 0 points 20 points (+20|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Sunrise, sunset. This place is so much better than reddit right now but you're right, this is a cycle that will very likely repeat itself. Hey, it'll be a fun ride while it lasts! (hopefully 5-6 years or more)

Change is a force we can not stop.

However brief, I will enjoy my time spent here. In less than 2 weeks, I have enjoyed my stay on voat more than the whole year I spent on reddit.

I use the skills I learned on reddit to make this place better. I'd say the best we can do is call bullshit, and not compromise our integrity. Also things like the rating restrictions are good. Free speech is something earned, not something given. Really. Downvoat toxic replies. Keep a natural sense of selection to this place. True free speech is preserved by those that recognize the toxicity, and do not enable it. Remember, freedom of speech does not exempt one from the freedom of judgement. I'm not exempt from this either and own my choices and words. And I suck with words.

I'll also never say things like, "Can we not:" even if I find it childish. It is anothers choice to do or say something, and if it isn't hurtiing anything I have no place to say it can't be said. Example: I hate that many people keep saying, "the other place." Like reddit is something that should be hush hush talk. This to me is kind of an immature statement, it implies that somehow we are better. Like we can't make the same mistakes. That will be our first mistake. We need to grow as a respective community. We can't let ourselves feel superior. We just need to own it. Don't act better, be better. Don't be afraid to mention Reddit and how we have grown as a community. But also, its someone's choice to do that, and I recognize that telling them what not to say doesn't really help anything or even change anything, and that the statement isn't really a problem in the first place, so long as I don't make it one.

this ends my thoughts I guess. Like I said I"m not actually very good with words, and don't know how to really conclude this thought other than to say do with it what you will. So here's this: http://i.imgur.com/j6NIlVI.jpg

Given the level of persecution suffered by that community from the world at large, I'm not particularly surprised that Voat caved.. somewhat disappointed that a compromise on a core value has already taken place, but not surprised.

We all should keep in mind that free speech means for all ... equally. It is also up to us to let others voice their views and opinions even if we do not agree with them ... they too have a right to free expression and open discussion.

I'm just happy to be apart of this community ... and it's really up to all of us ...")

"there was Digg, a site where people posted their favorite web content until a redesign and new features made its fickle users scatter to other corners of the web"

fickle users? They removed everyone's comment history and completely and fundamentally changed what the site was (e.g. they would curate the articles, not users). Almost the only thing that stayed the same was the name.

There was nothing fickle about it. It would be like http://time.com suddenly no longer being a left leaning op ed site, and instead became a fan site for transgender roller derbies. Sure, some people might support the change, but most users would probably start spending more time at huffpo.
