OP left out the part where it was a BLACK confederate flag supporter that was killed.

(b-b-b-b-but I thought only evil white racist rednecks support that flag!)

Here's the link for everyone else's convenience, also some people probably don't trust that somewhat sketchy looking link.

I don't think you know what the Confederate flag stands for. It doesn't stand for racism. The victory write the history books so of course they'll teach you otherwise.

Holy shit I knew that guy. I live in Oxford, MS and would see him once or twice a month in full confederate uniform walking with the confederate flag. He was a really nice guy that would constantly get harassed, but wouldn't raise his voice in return. This really bums me out.

I also used to him see him around Oxford. Especially around 2001 with the state flag referendum heating up.

I think you're thinking of Penn and Teller's Bullshit - The Reparations episode, but that was H. K. Edgerton, a very interesting man.

Seems like once a week I say to myself, "If I read this in a novel, I would think it was too far fetched to be believable"

If this were a cartoon, there'd be a lot more falling anvils.

There have been way weirder fringe candidates. Palin is the most bizarro-world candidate who actually got close to winning (and in her case only because she was a cartoon attachment to one of the two real candidates, picked on a drunken bet, not because anyone chose her on her own merits)

I think we've hit a tipping point of television having too much influence on the public. This is something straight out of bad television.

honor blacks who served with the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Can someone educate me, was this a thing and what were these men's motivations?

Free Blacks did serve and fight for the South during the Civil War

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_African_Americans_in_the_American_Civil_War#African_Americans_in_the_CSA

there were also black slave owners in the South, although they weren't common apparently more common than I realized.

There were also more non-black slaves that were exported and traded in during that time period in general. Slavery is by no means a strictly African American, nor by any stretch American, issue.. but we always seem to frame it as such. We also ignore the utter genocide of the Native Americans that were totally and maliciously slaughtered, but hey.

The civil war and slavery issue is far more complex than most people know.

Some slaves were actually paid a salary (though they still worked by force, and their salaries were doubtlessly woefully small). In rare cases some slave owners let their slaves hunt for food (with guns,) in order to reduce operational overhead. Getting the slaves to feed themselves lowered the slave owners' expenses, and much of the calories a slave consumed from a self-caught wild boar or wild turkey went back into labor.

Most Americans don't know that New York was a slave state, and a huge number of the slaves brought from Africa were trafficked through New York. For a time New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland were all slave states. Also, during a long period of British rule these were slave colonies.

None of this is to say that slavery was morally defensible. What I'm saying is that it was complicated while it was happening, and now with the foggy hindsight of history mixed in with both current and 20th century politics - it is a huge complicated mess.

Ave, Voater! Permit, if you will, that this humble Imperator explain the situation: Unlike the numerus of the exercitus Romanorum, who often fought against their own tribes such as the Daci or Marcomanni, the nubian men who "fought" for the confederacy were not free men; they were mostly slaves who undertook menial labour. The exception to this was that, when the Confederacy knew it would lose, they tried to offer libertus status to any slaves who joined their army.

They fought to protect their homes, which happened to be in the South.

Tonight on FoxNews:

"Black crowd murders 'rebel flag' supporter in cold blood. Free speech rights violated in savage attack."

Tonight on MSNBC:

"Black man killed in the south because of 'rebel flag' dispute. This is why we need more gun control."
