Much like net neutrality this sounds AWESOME. Right up until you read it.
To fix this problem we need look no further than the US vs the EU Constitutions. The EU constitution is slightly over 100 times longer than the US Constitution. There is a very simple reason for this. The US Constitution doesn't use the word EXCEPT 5 times in every paragraph.
Want to stop discrimination? Make it illegal to discriminate. DO NOT make it illegal to discriminate against blacks, gays, and paraplegics. Just go with pure meritocracy. Or as we used to say in the good old days before participation trophies: May the best man win!
I honestly didn't even get through all the definitions in this bill. Hate Speech was Fantastic. According to the bill hate speech is anything that hurts your feels. GREAT. Stop there. And they did. Hate Speech is in DIRECT opposition to the First Amendment. They are literally on opposite sides of the same war. Anyone that uses the term hate speech should probably be prosecuted.
But then the whole thing falls apart. WHY is the bill crafted ONLY to go after Farcebook and twitville? Why not all the others? Is DISCRIMINATION on Tumblr more legally acceptable just because fewer people go there? This is sort of like the Chicago murder rate: it's ok to kill 4 people a day - but only in these zip codes.
But this is lawmakers. And this is EXACTLY how we got in the mess we find ourselves in today. The fundamental moral failing is the desire for equal outcomes. They had rather do nothing at all than work towards equal opportunities.
