It isn't just the actual device to worry about either. Even if the microphone is there for a legitimate reason and welcomed by the user (such as on a smart phone) and the company itself is not abusing it, it is easy for a 3rd party app to hijack it. Something as benign as a news or weather app can be sending your data back to some agency or a foreign entity w/o your knowledge.

It is even beyond that: I went to buy an adapter the other day that will allow you to project your iPhone onto a TV with HDMI (yes I know about Bluetooth, but I refused to buy a smart TV because of concerns of "spying" etc.), and there was a much cheaper version of it from a Chinese company, but it required you to "just check the box that this is a trusted device". WTF?

trusted device just allows it to send and recieve information, nigger. Of course you need to do that to use an adaptor.

And yet when I bought the one from Apple I didn't need to trust it, and trusted devices can make changes and access certain things based on your security and permissions settings. You sound like a guy walking around who China and the CIA can hear and see everything you do from your phone, smart TV, Siri etc.. :)
