Rimmer's face was not cut in half. The general account of events is true but not those deceptive details. He even says as much in this and other articles, "Ben revealed his head was almost split in two by the blow which cleaved his face".

I kind of thought this description was extreme as well.
Based on the way that axe was swung, it is very unlikely it would have done much "cutting". Unless you are talking about a very specific axe owned by a very specific person who maintains the edge and uses it for hewing timber into beams, chances are good that axe is not that sharp. It takes a very sharp axe to shave bark, for example. Assuming this trannie didn't sharpen that axe, it's likely it didn't cut. When you talk about an axe used to split logs, it has more to do with the fact the log being split is supported by something noncompressible, and the wedge shape of the axe drives it into end grain that tends to want to split down the length of the log. Similarly, a fire axe is more of a blunt instrument as well. It's the force of driving the wedge shape into something fixed that does the cutting, like a bedroom door.
The man's head isn't fixed against anything. Now, if his head had been on the ground and she swung from above? Sure. That would crush the head into mush. If she swung hard enough with him standing like in the video, it is conceivable she could have separated cartilage by hitting his nose, for example.
But in this context it's more of just a blunt instrument. It could have cut skin, but more along the line of how an elbow or knuckles can split skin. It's more of a tear than a cut. It probably broke bones, however. An axe could easily crush an orbital or separate a jaw from its joint. So I'm not downplaying the severity of the wounds here. This should definitely be considered an attempted murder.
EDIT: What makes me more angry and confirms we live in a fucking nightmare right now, the news won't ever play this. They'll be more upset about a 16 year old who didn't say a word or lift a finger, than they will be at a trannie who attempted to murder an innocent person because she was "touchy after a bad date".
