An honest cop wears a body cam.
A cop not wearing a body cam isn't honest.
Plain and simple.

there are instances where the average citizen would be better off without the body cam. for example: in rough american cities many, many cops dont pursue pot smokers. they dont take weed when they find it, they dont arrest people for smoking it, they dont hassle the people selling it... with the camera on, all that would technically have to stop. community interactions would become more hostile when cops are required to pursue every single infraction.

im 100% for body cams on cops 100% of the time... just wanted to throw out there that there are implications we havent addressed yet. policy needs to change if cops are expected to do their jobs and still wear a camera 100% of the time.

there is actually a great episode of Car 54 that addresses this in a round about way. "Toody & Muldoon Crack Down", its on youtube if you're into cheesy American TV from the early 60s. the main theme being that a cops greatest asset in a neighborhood is his good reputation with the people.

Nobody's going to be looking through the footage to see who's committing a minor crime. If cops decide to overlook something like that, nobody will find out. Just as it already is where they don't bother going after someone unless they receive a complaint, as cops aren't required to pursue every single infraction.

Yes, and their rep is already shot.

Careful there, this isn't true, and could be used against citizens as well. "If you're honest, allow the government to spy on everything you. If you don't allow that, you're not honest."

It is true. Every time video evidence surfaces it contradicts what the cops claim happened.

And no, cops are to be held to a higher standard than regular citizens.

There's a difference between privacy and accountability.
