The issue a lot of people don't realize is that a laser isn't a cylinder, it's cone shaped.

Upside is that you can see the dot at a distance (no way you're seeing a 2mm green dot on the side of a building four blocks away)

Downside is that the dot is actually several feet across at the ranges they hit a plane, and still bright enough to temporarily blind someone, or potentially cause permanent damage

Actually, the last time I heard a story like this, the pilot had permanent damage done to his retina. These things are no joke.

Yes, this makes it very hard to see in the cockpit. You can do one quick google search to validate that assertion. Seriously, who upvotes this?
