I think a neglected point in all this is that this trend isn't just about sports watching, it's also about sports playing. I don't think the big three team games that every high school in America plays are the same rites of passage they once were. Kids are more sedentary, and if they don't play the sports when they're young they're not going to spectate when they're older. You can blame the trend up to all kinds of things like the progressive effeminization of the Western male, or simply chalk it up to changing cultural attitudes about leisure activities. Either way though I don't expect there's going to be a resurgence in ESPN's future viewership.
