Are there any processes used to ensure chain of custody of ballot papers and ballot boxes? This all seems like fucking amateur hour.

You would think that at each polling place, they would be supplied with ballot boxes which are numbered (serial numbers) and each time one is used (taken to have ballots put in it) it would be added to a master list of boxes that is verified by at least two independent sources. List would be updated when said box is sealed, and the master list would be used to verify that all used boxes have been sealed at the close of the ballot and that they are all accounted for when transferring to be counted. Etc, etc.

It's not that hard really. The cynic (realist) in me concludes that the system is deliberately set up to be unable to account for ballots so as to make cheating easier.
