The problem is instead of trying to improve, they'd rather destroy the smart, good, or successful.

EXACTLY. It's why evil is NOT good. THe problex being I AM smart. Perhaps I'm biased. Perhaps Evil IS better?

My theory is that it's just easier to destroy than to build, and weak people will choose the easiest path. Look what it takes to become a doctor, for example. It takes balls. Waking up every day to go to work and being nice to people is harder than walking out the door in a bad mood and being an asshole. Destruction can be accomplished in seconds. Doing anything good takes time and sustained will power. It's not easy.
