The idea of Daylight Savings Time. I'm all in favor of abolishing it.

It was so kids would have some daylight when coming home. But didn't that mean that they'd have less in the moring?

It was initially suggested by Ben Franklin as a way to mock the French habit of sleeping late. It became popular in WW1 and again in WW2 as a way to save energy. (It was called War Time then.)
Congress established the official start and end days in 1966, but it had nothing to do with kids and school. Nixon extended it during the energy crisis to run for more than a year.
