Not cutting them off, but keeping them out of society for everyone else's safety is the point.

Not everyone is an animal. Just the violent criminals. It's not for the criminals it's for the people who care about them. They didn't do anything wrong they don't need to be punished for the sins of their loved ones.

The people who care about convicts are part of the society which we are keeping criminals out of. Just because a prisoner knows someone on the outside doesn't mean they should get to have godamned hangouts with them.

Prison is supposed to be a punishment, a place where rights and privileges most people take for granted are suspended from you. The idea is to make you dearly miss those rights, and thus you modify your behavior to avoid losing said rights ever again. The easier you make prison on prisoners, the less likely they are going to decide "This place is the absolute worse, I'll never do anything that could lead to me ending up here ever again!"

Instead they'll have fond memories of their girlfriend having a nice conjugal visit, despite the fact that the prisoner killed someone else's girlfriend while drunk driving. Drunk drivers aren't considered "violent criminals", but they endanger society anyway- and they need to learn a fucking lesson. You can't tell me that babying prisoners (the way we have been for many decades now) is working as far as reforming them.

I stand by my point- if you want to spend time in person with your loved ones, don't break the fucking law and then nobody will interfere with your family time! A novel concept, apparently.
