In my experience, banks always suck. Credit unions are always the way to go.

Absolutely agreed. I've been banking with a local credit union ever since I was in high school, and they never gave me the short end of the stick, even after 14 years.

I had a bad experience with one when I first started my career. I had been working in a professional capacity for a year, and had a decent amount of savings, and they still denied me a credit card. So, I took my business elsewhere, but I should investigate again. Probably just that particular CU that sucked.

Credit Unions are generally better than banks, but some do suck. The one I deal with, while better than a bank, has had a nasty habit over the years of making policy changes and not publicizing them past a single line, one time, in a newsletter you won't get unless you have paper statements or know exactly where and when to look online.

I found out they changed ATM networks when I was charged a $5.75 foreign fee one day. The person I spoke with over the phone reversed it, and stated she didn't know why that happened, as it was the same location as past transactions. It did it again two weeks later, call, and found out they had dropped the nationwide network in favor of their little 5-unit network. Person I spoke with this time seemed annoyed I hadn't read the paper newsletter that I didn't get.

That being said, be aware there are some very old-school credit unions out there. The ones my folks belong to acts primarily as a savings and loan, they take deposits and make member loans, and don't offer checking accounts or more than a few withdraw per year.

All of (((them))), even (((credit unions))), practice fractional reserve banking.

This is truth. It's a matter of getting fucked over less.

That's why I use the barter system. I gave the guy who fixed my roof ten pounds of potatoes and three sacks of flour.

BoA and Wells Fargo are two banks nobody should ever use again.

You might be able to roll that retirement into another retirement account of your choosing, outside of that bank. Maybe once a year? Pretty sure you can though.

That’s pretty much the reputation NFCU has anyways. They have always been courteous and helpful.

Yeah, it's too bad I had to close my NFCU account when I moved simply because there wasn't a single office of theirs within 300+ miles of me.

Their online app is better than going into the local trash credit union. I even needed to get a money order asap, and the lady on the phone looked up where the nearest place was for me and did a wire transfer. All I had to do was show up with my ID and I was out in 5 minutes.

That's no excuse to close an account with them! I left mine in limbo for a while, but I still had my account.

You can also use other credit unions in network as an in person teller.

Why did you need an office? You can do everything through an app aside from draw out large amounts of cash... Like literally everything they offer can be done on their website or the app.

Thank you for posting! I've been thinking about changing, and I appreciate the extra motivation!

BoA also drags it feet in order to charge you more. Like many other service based businesses they artificially create barriers for extra income. I use an internet/ATM account and they charge me a fee to use a human teller for anything.

i caught BoA doing a bad bad thing. they thought i couldn't do math and owed me about 6 grand in interest one year. (remember when savings accounts acutally paid interest?)
