In an interview with Re/code's Kara Swisher, Pao is quoted as saying that her departure stems from a disagreement with reddit's board of directors on the direction reddit should go. "They had a more aggressive view than I did," said Pao.

Granted, I don't trust Pao, but if it's true, that could mean things are going to get worse, not better.

[–] this_is_patrick 0 points 11 points (+11|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Yup, reddit was just starting to make money when they brought her on. They got her to make Reddit more profitable and more into a company (presumably to make investors happy) rather than the small community it was before.

0
75

[–] fluffingtonthefifth 0 points 75 points (+75|-0) ago

Pretty much. They brought her on so she could make unpopular decisions, and then they fired her once she was no longer needed as a figurehead for hate.

0
26

[–] Ifaptocomments 0 points 26 points (+26|-0) ago

Yeah the core set of admins and mods who were wrecking the place up are still there. Pao was really just the figure head.

0
11

[–] rob_white 0 points 11 points (+11|-0) ago

Maybe, but she wasn't really a good fit anyway, if they wanted a sacrificial lamb they still could have picked someone much better than her. Getting unpopular choices made could have been handled so much better, plus she was in the middle of a scammy law suit as well, had no clue how to even use the site. Maybe she was the scapegoat but even so a really shitty choice.

I actually wouldn't mind being an interim CEO who's only there to make sure the company does what the board wants and take the blame. It's like that scene in Armageddon where Steve Buscemi's character says, Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes, and they let me use explosives, okay?

[–] pinkmagnet 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

[–] Lootaluck 0 points 32 points (+32|-0) ago

The Venture capitalists want a return on their investment, you can bet Reddits going to continue to go down hill just like Digg did.

Worse yet, it will have the appearance of community support, but behind the curtain it will be advertisors that determine what content is seen and whats acceptable

1
2

[–] sneakybells 1 points 2 points (+3|-1) ago

I disagree. I think there will always be market for a free and open discourse, voat is just filling that void. To take them out of that would be removing one of their most important assets. Investors aren't always a bad thing, besides, I think youre conflating shareholders with venture capitalists.

I'm staying with Voat. This place feels warm and fuzzy. My comments don't get lost in the shuffle and I've had more conversations on Voat than I've ever had over at Reddit. I really like it here.

+1 to that. I know lots of people are pissed off about the upvoat and downvoat restrictions but i actually like it. It sort of promotes being active in the community. More comments/activity = more say in what content becomes popular.

0

[–] 809691? 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

Hopefully they will pick up. I agree that its a bit of a shame that the last submission on some verses is 6 months ago.

0
1

[–] TrebbleBiscuit 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

That's really the only major disadvantage of this site, the larger communities are much easier to be a part of though.

0
0

[–] localbum 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

They will be. Pao stepping down doesn't mean there won't be another mass exodus in the upcoming weeks, and Voat's already got a bit of a foot hold. Even if the number stagnated for a while, people will create the communities around their interests no matter where they go. Those communities will naturally attract old and new followers to it.

Ready for a little bit of the same ol' same ol' advice? Be patient, it'll grow. Give it a minute.

They do act with their customers in mind. Except their customers aren't the users; it's advertisers. That's the root of the problem. That's the reason for the cleansing of "undesirable" subreddits. And that's why the site will slowly die.

Hopefully voat will continue to run off of donations (or something like reddit gold), assuming that's possible.

Same. Reddit has shown the world how quickly it will fuck over its regular, long term customers for no real reason. It would be an absolute tragedy if the world let them get away with that. Name one other company that would fuck over their regular customer base, and tell me you would go back if only the "temporary" boss stepped down.

It means Ellen Pao is no longer CEO. If she was really the person dictating the changes, then yes. But if it was the money people doing it,we've just traded one figurehead for another.

0

Either way I'm still staying on Voat; that other site as a whole has become too toxic and crowded for my taste.

Based on the announcement on Reddit Steve Huffman is taking back the reigns.

0
7

[–] Shoggoth 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

And it says she'll still act as an advisor until the end of 2015, so she still has influence.

0
5

But hopefully that figurehead won't be able to cry out "misogyny" every time the changes are criticised, which will be a nice change.

[–] Spotddawg 0 points 24 points (+24|-0) ago

Good, but I can't tolerate that site any more than her. Hopefully they stay running strong and full of feminist/SJW knuckleheads and keep VOAT free from the shackles of their stupidity. One place for hivemind, one for open discussion, reason, and, diversity of thought and experience..

1
6

[–] reodd 1 points 6 points (+7|-1) ago

With Voat not censoring or regulating behavior, how exactly are we going to keep it free from the "shackles of their stupidity"? I'm actually interested in how you'd recommend structuring that.

From the stickied post at SRS:

Congratulations Reddit, through spreading lies and misinformation you successfully harrassed yet another women in tech, and a rare female CEO, with your relentless and sexist abuse, into quitting her job.

And look, the second highest (and gilded) post in the official announcement thread, is this hilarious pun:

Pao! Right in the kisser.

However this means that she took to heart that the community was unhappy with the changes she made and that she was no longer useful as a CEO. Lets just hope she doesn't sue for discrimination.

this means that she took to heart that the community was unhappy with the changes she made and that she was no longer useful as a CEO

Do you really think so? I think it means the people holding the purse strings are trying to stop the bleeding by using her as a scapegoat. I don't think this will substantively change anything.

0
1

[–] hypercat 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

Yeah, I guess I did say that. I now disagree with my previous statement as I have discovered "resign" and "mutal" do not mean what I though they did. I guess I always hope for the best in people and then discover the worst.

0
4

[–] mastranios 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

She was interim CEO for a reason. She didn't even hold the office for a year, made a ton of unpopular changes and gave the masses a ugly face to point their fingers at and bitch. The real question is if those changes are going to stick. Is Victoria going to get hired back on? Is the creator of reddit gifts going to be hired back on? Are they going to bring back FPH? We will see but I am not holding my breath.

0
1

[–] Jon_TWR 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

If I were Victoria, I wouldn't go back even if they offered it as an option.

Well, maybe I would if there were a title bump and big pay bump.

0

[–] hypercat 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Oh I definitely agree. It's like you cut off one head and 2 grow back. I think the next CEO will just sneak in and continue making the changes I am sure were decided months ago. A website doesn't just wake up one day and decide to change something, they have months of meetings, votes, studies to see if profits will rise, etc.

It will happen to Voat if Voat gets larger, unless something changes. I've seen suggestions of adding an "agree/disagree" option alongside the upvoat/downvoats. If that happens it might limit the hivemind circlejerks if people can express their disagreement without downvoating. We'll have to see.

0

[–] TrebbleBiscuit 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

The small town feeling is nice, and it's something Voat needs to try to keep as it gets bigger, I think that's what the limits on downvoats are trying to do.
