You announced you were a felon and, then, acting as if that made you an authority on the subject

Never did that either..

All I know is you got caught once. No idea how often you messed up.

You could say this about anyone lmfao

And "felon" is not a title you often find on an upstanding citizen

Based on what? Felons don't just walk up and say "attention everyone, I am a felon". If you saw me on the streets you'd just say "oh cool some nerdy dude maybe he can fix my computer".

until that one fateful day, when he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time

My entire criminal history is from one year. Let's ignore the other 26 years and just focus on this one night.

Putting your past aside, your objection seems to be that this sentence is far too harsh, because it damages the perpetrators life and prospects, and because many felons carry on committing crimes afterward

No. Because it's injustice. Injustice has negative consequences. That consequence is not rehabilitating criminals, taking everything they have to live for and then releasing them back into the general population which now blows back on the community as a whole.

A prison sentence isn't meant to be kind, or pleasant, or to help you build a better life for yourself.

OK. Then it's torture, not justice. And yes that was the original intent of the Department of Corrections, to correct bad behavior. This concept of torturing people just to say 'fuck you' is relatively recent, and completely counter-productive.

Prison isn't there to fix that for you. It's there to help everyone else, by getting you off the streets for a while

for a while

Then what? And if your son was the one who fucked up you'd presumably just want him locked away indefinitely right? What about their families? You realize most people just plead guilty immediately because 1. They constantly miss work for court hearings and "pre-trial supervision" (which is essentially where you are treated as if you are guilty "just in case", which is completely unconstitutional not like you give a fuck) 2. The police typically stack on as many charges as possible so you're risking a lot by fighting it, even if you are innocent, and by pleading out you just get sentenced to what you should've originally been charged with in the first place.

And it's there to punish you, harshly, to let you know that this kind of shit won't be tolerated, and to instill fear of fucking up like this again. The carrot failed, so here's the stick.

You clearly don't know much about prison other than dank memes and shows on TV. The people who get "punished" are the ones who don't fit in and who try to fly the straight and narrow like me. It literally encourages degeneracy and discourages becoming a model citizen. Thankfully I don't give a fuck what tatted up Neanderthals think of me but I also identify how they could be shown a better way of life.

That's what parents, and school, and friends, and community are meant to do for you

A lot of people don't have those things. You sound like a privileged entitled twat who has never had to experience hardship.
