There is a big difference between turn the other cheek and taking your enemies onto your breast.

I've taken the 'turn the other cheek' bit to concern your brothers. I took it this way prior to seriously reading the Bible, once I read the entire book of Matthew a few times, it seems pretty certain that is what is being said. Matthew 5:22 relates to this. I struggled with Matthew 5:28, but I realized, it's not concerning all women, obviously. http://biblehub.com/kjv/matthew/5.htm But women who having sex with who it would be considered adultery to have sex with (brothers wife, members of your church wives and so on).

If turning your cheek was meant to be taken literally, Christianity would never have survived. The biggest clue to this though concerns Jesus commanding his disciples to buy swords and what they did with them when they merely threatened Jesus.

It just means don't get caught up over stupid stuff. People who are emotionally immature and childish always get obsessed over petty shit. Especially in relationships. Or online, people talk shit and get pissed off while you keep your cool and they end up looking like the fool.

To "turn the other cheek" is to ignore an insult, not to let someone have their way with you.

In Matthew 5:28, Jesus is trying to explain that all have sinned and there is no one who can say: "I have honestly never sinned before, ever." A sin does not require a physical action, it could even be a thought. He is explaining that not a single person can come to the Father unless they accept the gift of Jesus Christ.

Turn the other cheek, Jews wanted to place Jesus in trouble with the Roman authority, so that God would help his prophet by destroying the Romans thus twisting the will of God. When a Roman strikes a believer what should we do asked the Jews as if they don't know...had Jesus said strike him back an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth as God commanded then they will inform on him and the Romans would arrest him for aggression and had he said don't do anything then he was no Prophet. Jesus said Turn the other cheek.....as an act of defiance a roman striking a second time would elevate the Slave Jew to his level. Something no cowardly Jew would ever dare do. Think about it like the hulk hogan I slap you you stare in my eyes and give me the other cheek. Jews tried several times over and over to get Jesus in trouble with the Authority until in the end they handed him over to them, but did they have the last laugh...

Yes, but there is an even more precise way to say this. While I have no idea about the original Aramaic/Greek/Hebrew, in the Latin Bible "love your enemies" is translated as "inimicos". Now in Latin, the word for actual enemies, the enemies of the community, from outside the community, like a country you war with are called "hostes". "Inicimos" are enemies inside the community - basically RIVALS.

So it is "love your rivals"

All I can say is, if heaven is real, this polish priest will go to heaven and this despicable pope will go to hell.

csicskageci is actually pretty close. This particular topic is one I bring up when people quote the bible because it shows how historical culture can distort the message. In short, a man asks Jesus something like, "If a man shall strike me for following you what shall I do." Jesus replied to the effect offer him the other cheek or "turn the other cheek" The idea being someone insults you for following Jesus by backhanding you. That was an insult at the time. Now the one doing the insulting (insulter (my made up word.)) would only do this with his right hand. Why only his right hand? Because you wiped your ass with your left and there was no toilet paper. You would never touch someone with your left hand. So, if you turn the other cheek the only way for him to slap you is with an open palm. To slap someone with an open palm was, while still trying to piss someone off, a gesture of equality.

Jesus, was simply saying, "Make them treat you as an equal."
