They don't have a choice. Instinct takes over and they do one or the other. That's why they always say afterwards they don't feel heroic.

If you know yourself, you probably do know what would happen.

This. I always cringe a little when someone says It's 'brave' or 'heroic'. The person had no real choice, they're the rush in type or they aren't. I don't exactly hate the cop who froze up - he was tested, and failed. Time to get into another profession, bro.

Im not mad at him either. No one really knows what they would do if they havnt been in that situation. The officer cowering poetically illustrates why the 2nd is so important. You cant count on anyone to save you but yourself. Even when the cops are right around the corner, they have 0 obligation to protect you. Having to hear the cops then say we need to give up our guns and rely on failures to protect us has made me really mad.
