Just remember who these guys do Business with: Our government and whoever else will pay them. (With our tax dollars!)

This just shows you Snowden is correct. They set people up with child porn to gain control over them.

EDIT: The links they use ARE fake, but that's irrelevant. They have viral injector software and what they are selling is: "You can plant whatever you want on your target." -Using childporn and bomb plans as their examples is more than tongue-in-cheek, it's how they KNOW it will be used.

These guys were breaking into a market dominated by one entity. Apparently market dilution will not be tolerated.

The writing has been on the wall for some time already. Even today people still don't realize how they're being manipulated. Child pornography is the government's wet dream.

I really hope that comments like this start getting downvoated on this site. It would be nice if we could all act like we are at least over 18 for topics that are serious in nature. I'm all for a good pun, but the level that it grew to on reddit was intolerable.

Alright, I feel bad for making comments before actually reading further into the code and realizing this is just an inside joke from the programming team. Their entire source is on Github, if anyone is interested and there's further, more detailed information about this specific line of code here:

No because the assertion isn't true. The code is a joke from the developers. Notice the image comes from bullshit central Ars Technica too.

[–] mr_gone 1 points 62 points (+63|-1) ago  (edited ago)

(copypasta from my other reply)

uh, no, that's not a comment. not in the linked image, and even if it's commented out by block commenting outside the image, it's valid code and simple to uncomment. as a dev, even if it were a comment, I wouldn't look at that as a joke, but as an example of common potential usages. it indicates that the idea is a familiar one.

in my opinion that comment needs downvotes for spreading disinfo.

edit: Ruby devs have pointed out that the example filenames are deactivated by an or operator. that's fine - the code is still there, and the example used is child porn. another has commented that is a logging operation. it does look like a function that simply creates a log message string. in fact, the specified code doesn't even indicate that this is a string sent to a remote system. ..but obviously the full use and context isn't visible in that small of a code snippet.

would it not be rather damning simply to have (as in the example provided in the code) logged references to child porn on your system?

now, if op is lying or incorrect about the overall capabilities of Galileo, then that's another thing. but, if it does indeed have the ability to log false info regarding files on the target system (and possibly upload files), the the fact that the given example is one of framing someone (tongue-in-cheek or otherwise) is reasonably concerning.

Could you elaborate a bit? How do you know it's a joke and why is Ars Technica bullshit? Honestly curious, don't know anything about code or the website.

I'm not sure if you are joking and didn't include the /s tag but if you aren't, can you explain why you think AT is bullshit?

Seems like a well written article to me.

Joke or not, the fact over the matter is this is completely possible, and the fact that they openly joke about CP and bombs makes it look even worse.

It looks more like some sort of logging system. When you call that function you usually supply a process name and a path. If you don't provide either it will randomly pick a process or a path from those lists. It does not create files with those names.

The code is also written in Ruby which is probably the worst language you could pick to run malware on most computers (as most computers run Windows and don't play nicely with Ruby). It is also using mongodb. I am pretty sure it's meant to run on an internal server and never interact with any real targets.

Hackers throw child porn on target's computer.... It's Super effective ! This is awful and horrible for so many reasons but genius.

[–] Messiadbunny 0 points 24 points (+24|-0) ago

I agree it's horrible, not really genius though. It's one of the few crimes that I think almost everyone can agree is wrong and disgusting. I doubt many people would give someone the benefit of the doubt or consider siding with them if it involves possession of child pornography.

0
25

[–] ComedianKellan 0 points 25 points (+25|-0) ago

Yeah finding child porn on your computer is one of those crimes where even if you are found innocent the media would slander you so much that you would never regain your former status. If Tiger woods had been found for child porn on his computer instead of just sleeping around he would have never bounced back from it.

[–] Drezynit 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago

Exactly, and that's why its a weapon so effective. I called genius, but maybe i should call it smart or not dumb, all i mean is that you can't get the fuck out of the shitty situation you're in when you have child pornography, because this so fucking disguting and horrible for everybody. So no benefit of the doubt.

Horrible, yes. Genius, god no. This is beyond a simple strategy that doesn't even take that much computer skill to do. It's just sad more than anything.

This isn't true as it was said somewhere else. This line of code is a comment, it's a joke by the developers. Read the code - "childporn.avi"? The other one said something like "bomb_blueprints.pdf". It's a joke.

EDIT: Ok according to mr_gone, this isn't a comment. Can we confirm what language this actually is? It would appear I've been misinformed, sorry for jumping the gun.

EDIT: It's Ruby, definitely not a comment. Although the sample filenames there would seem to obscure to be true, I guess one should keep in mind the rest of the ridiculous shit we've seen leaked from the same people.

[–] Sargent_Neckbeard 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I'm 65% sure that it's looking for a directory called childporn.avi (which is a place holder name that the programmer changes) in order to create a folder for evidence purposes. I'm not sure why OP linked a .jpg instead of the actual code. https://github.com/hackedteam/rcs-common/blob/master/lib/rcs-common/evidence/file.rb

The line of code that you are referring to is definitely not a comment. I don't know why you think it is.I'm not going to type out the exact line in question, but it's functionally identical to this:

path = hash[:path] || ["C:\badstuff1", "C:\badstuff2", "C:\badstuff3"]

There's not even a comment in that line. || is a logical or symbol, and the \ is how you specify the \ symbol inside of a string.

So, I have no idea where you are getting the idea that that line is a comment or a joke from. It's functional code, and it's not funny.

EDIT: Voat apparently also interprets two successive backslashes as a single backslash, which is why that part may not make sense.

2

[–] jamesmillner 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

the code is saying: "if hash[:path] returns false then return one of the bad file names instead". You need to know how likely it is that hash[:path] returns false. Out of context (and not knowing Ruby) I couldn't say.

Are people barely realizing how incredibly easy it is to weaponize cp? It really makes you wonder how many people sitting in jail for cp charges are actually innocent. It's terrifying to think your whole life could be ruined so easily by anyone who has access to your computer. Who's ever going to believe you?

Shit, imagine a crazy wife/husband doing this to their partner to gain custody of their kids before a divorce.

The way we've demonized cp has turned it into a terrifying weapon.
