It is strange, but it's a thing that happens every year in France, at least since long enough before 2007-08-09 when I was there that they expected it. They said the same thing then 'considering the riots that wasn't half bad' and I said the same thing to my host family: "what the ever loving fuck are you even talking about? there were zero cars burned in america which is 10 times bigger" and they basically said its normal there.

In 2008 (paris riots) there were 402 cars burned on new years.
