Oh wow, thanks for the education. I thought wind power was more successful than this. Is it worthwhile at all, based on this? Sounds like it isn't except maybe in perfect conditions

Some offshore power plants might be ok. but there are not many locations where it is feasible to build those either. And even then you need some sort of back up power. Hydro dams are the only power source that can be turned on and off at will, but it would be a waste of effort to build a huge dam just to not have it running all the time.
