The MSM has been trying to start a race war for as long as I've been alive.

In the 90s black violence was over hyped and sensationalized. Hillary's "super predators" remarks were a product of the 90s. Whichever side they've been on, she's been on the same page.

Cops who don't like body cams need a new line of work. We got lots of muzzies they can police in the sandbox.

The only person that should be against body cams are the perp. If the cop acts in self defense, the body cam can clear them of guilt. If the cop does wrong, the body cam defends the victim. Either way, the body cam only helps

The problem doesn't lie in the cameras themselves, it's in the current disparity between reality, and the popular culture version of right and wrong. The leftists "police brutality" is the realists "good shoot".

Did you read the story? OPs title is wrong - should read "killers attorneys don't want defense to show evidence during opening statements when defense has no chance to cross examine."

They have a point. Not that it matters - the shit cop deserves to fry, but you have to keep the court system honest, and presenting damning evidence with no chance for oppositon rebuttal isn't.

The witness would be the one recording the footage, the officer.

Opening statement is not the time for evidence, they're right.

It's not hard to make an opening statement that makes the defense look like an idiot if they're going to call witnesses that contradict evidence. Just tell the jury to listen carefully, and decide if the Witnesses are telling the truth based on what you can see in the video.

What possible reason could there be for NOT releasing the entire body cam? I mean shit, can a cover up be any more obvious?

To not bias the jury before a trial. They dont want a jury that is filled with public opinion that the officer is a murdering asshole... Which suggests that whatever is on the rest of the tape is pretty bad...

The tape will likely be played during the trial.

Good point. My outrage overrides my reason sometimes. I mean I understand cops have difficult jobs and deal with the scum of the earth but if you can't make rational decisions or are otherwise a trigger happy, bloodthirsty psychopath, you deserve the full weight of the law, the same as any non cop citizen would receive.

Attorney Michael Piccarreta says prosecutor Susie Charbel plans to show an 18-minute police body- camera recording during her opening statement, scheduled for Oct. 25.

Piccarreta says in the memo "that it is extremely unfair to the defense" to show the video during the opening statement because that wouldn't allow the defense lawyer to immediately cross-examine any witnesses about the footage. Piccarreta says he doesn't object to the video — which was recorded on Brailsford's body-worn camera —being shown later in the trial.

"This critical piece of evidence needs to be presented in the traditional way that evidence is presented so that both sides have the opportunity to question the witness about the video before it is played to the jury," Piccarreta wrote in the memo.

Here you go. I looked it up on a real site. (One that doesn't appear to believe the trial is over, even though it hasn't yet started...)

I don't think anyone is arguing that the footage being released is unfair. The defense is arguing that showing it during opening statements is unfair. I agree. You can read my opinion as a person who has been on a jury elsewhere in the thread if you are interested.

[–] MaFishTacosDaBombBro 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

They released it, it's just that they don't want to show the jury during the opening statements. I suppose the defense wants some semblance of hope that they will be able to pull off a good defense.

I'm glad to see the writer was fair and balanced, believing in innocent until proven guilty. /S

It sounds like the officer was a POS before this incident. Shame it took a death before action was taken.

In the article itself:

Piccarreta says in the memo “that it is extremely unfair to the defense” to show the video during the opening statement because that wouldn’t allow the defense lawyer to immediately cross-examine any witnesses about the footage.

The complaint isn't that the video is shown, but that it is shown without a timely defense and cross-examination. But that would of course make for a boring headline and create less outrage.

I think that cop is a scumbag and guilty as hell, but I still hate clickbait and heavy-handed narrative framing.

There's no need for immediate cross-examination. That can be done when its the defense's turn to call witnesses.
