There might be a few drawbacks. For one, your teeth might continue to keep growing unabated like sharks and your teeth would then need sanding like a horses shoes.

But I'm hoping the dental unions won't get in the way of this medical treatment.

How is the shark teeth thing a drawback?

[–] Martel-Sobieski 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Thats not a drawback unless the person is retarded. Even animals with constantly growing teeth have figured out how to deal with that

Just replace the dental work needed for cavities with regular teeth sanding. Everyones happy

Actually, you may be thinking of rodents. Squirrels, rabbits, mice, rats, et al, need to keep gnawing on stuff to wear their incisor teeth down, because they never stop growing.

Sharks have basically a "conveyor belt" of teeth that rotate into position.

Thus far, the procedure has only been used in mouse teeth.

the same teeth that naturally grows throughout the rodents lifetime to counteract the wear of the mouses diet?

yawn, let me know when they fix primate teeth with this.

Shame they can't just grab up a bunch of apes like they used to and get it done, maybe some volunteer prisoners too for that matter.

[–] Martel-Sobieski 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago

Animal rights activists get butthurt if you use apes too much. Like what should we do, use human test subjects? Not try to advance medical technology making life better for actual humans? Their bodies are close enough to our own theyre perfect to do medical tests on. At some point those faggots are just putting another species well being over the well being of our own. Theyre apes. Sure they may seem cute to you but you have to weigh pros and cons and it's better for humanity to use them as subjects.

I did like how in 28 days later the whole thing was caused by those retards.

This exactly. Mouse are a common first step for testing of many drugs but many don't make it to large mammals (i.e. dogs or pigs). That doesn't mean it won't work, but this is a good first step. Side effects are hard to evaluate in mouse (other than it didn't kill them), since their physiology is so different. There is hope, and some hope is better than no hope, no?

I watched a presentation once when I got suuuuper autistic about this stuff, and using some kind of stem-cell cultures all kinds of different drugs were tested and found to be lacking. Wish I could remember any of the names of stuff, but at the time my mom was on a certain drug that was listed and found to be actually safe. The level of tech they have is astounding, but they, thw ones who desire profit over efficable scientific results, don't actually want you to be safe or healed. They want you to be treated and continue that treatment your whole life. SAD

im most concerned with the fact that this discovery is nowhere near as useful as the article makes it out to be.

rodent teeth grow uniformly from fetus to death without the product so its effectiveness is greatly exaggerated, plus those teeth are a tenth to fifth the size of human teeth, so how will it be used to fill in a cavity? theres going to be a dentin plug in that spot that doesnt connect to the surrounding tooth material unless they just rip the tooth out and start over.

Yeah, plus if it's at the mouse stage it's so far off that it's not even worth being talked about yet

Kinda fucked up, considering dental fluorosis, genetic issues, a shit economy, and other factors have caused a lot of non-meth heads, non-junkies to have crappy teeth.

So the next step is to program some kind of multiplier maximum into the DNA sequence?

0
4

[–] GlassSmith 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

That already exists, it's called a telomer, it's a repetitive nucleotide sequences at the ends of a chromosome and can shut down the replication of a DNA strand when there is an excessive amount of damage done to it due to age, mutation, etc. The problem is that a lot of things that cause cancer destabilize cells and DNA in such ways that it interferes with the cells natural ability to shut down or be terminated by other healthy cells; the condition of cancer itself is the loss of a cells ability to properly control it's own replication process and as such replicating in such an unstable manner that it mutates to the point that it's no longer functioning properly as a part of an organ and is actively harming that organ.

Cells go rouge all the time (read up on how your body generates antibodies for specific diseases) it's just that under normal circumstances the cancer is limited to very few cells and the bodies immune system can just kill them, the solution here isn't stopping the cells from growing but adding a concise timing mechanism so the cells replicate on a slow set schedule that allows the body to remove any rouge cells and allows the division process to complete with minimal chance of mutation (that's how it works with skin).

I met this autistic kid once who had some kind of tooth disorder that made his teeth very fragile. Well all of his teeth were broken and jagged looking from doing weird autistic shit. He smiled and it looked like shark teeth.

It will either fill our head with teeth and kill us or will work like a charm... And be totally unaffordable. Lets face it, most dental shit is expensive as fuck and now they have just come out with the silver bullet. There is no way in hell that they are going to let it be accessible to the the common herd.

”It will either fill our head with teeth and kill us or will work like a charm..."

That's every drug commercial since 1982 (or thereabouts). Fuck you, big pharma! I'm STILL living a decent life in spite of my "restless leg syndrome" which is more commonly referred to as "walking" or "just fucking being bored".
