I'm coming to visit San Diego in January. Should I be concerned? Is hand-washing sufficient to prevent infection? Thanks in advance, Dr. Ball Z.

Hand washing is very effective.

I'd monitor the situation. Don't go swimming after a rain either. Wouldn't take kids or pets downtown at this point. Or immune compromised or elderly. Or ppl w liver issues.

Excellent comments above.

Sanitation suffices, but if you eat out, it would need to be practised by the help. Often Hep A passes unnoticed or as a mild or severe gastrointestinal problem. I'm very healthy and it went thru me with maybe a few days of sickness at most. I make a practice of exposing myself to misc bacteria by not washing my hands, unless others would be exposed. I also have excellent health. A strong immune system has protected man for millenia.

The amount of dog poop all over the place around and in pet friendly apartments is similar. Wait till human parvovirus mutates into a more virulent form.

Use your shirt (at the very least) to open doors, pump gas, use atm. Not just in San Diego.. Anywhere.

That would be as effective as licking the door handle.
