Up to 200 miles out... If I know anything about government speak the number is always reported as 1/2 of actual values. More fear mongering is all this is.

Stuff like this has been going on since the start of the Cold War.

since the start of the Cold War

The fact that current Russian policy is aligned with a continuing Cold War is the salient point. In Putin's Russia the breakup of the Soviet Union was a disaster for the world, and he is seeking to right the wrong. In Putin's revisionist rhetoric, Russia is just pushing back against NATO's expansionist aggression. Russia is actively re-establishing Cold War infrastructure in the Artic and in Cuba, and reintroducing Cold War tactics, like submarine probing of her Nordic neighbors.

Russia and China like to do bull shit like this on the regular. I'm in the Navy and their jets buzz our carriers all the time. They're close enough for us to give them the finger and have it be visible, so we do.

From the article: While intercepts of Russian aircraft off Alaska occur frequently, intercepts off California are less common. In June last year a two long-range Russian bombers flew within 50 miles of northern California.

Doing that on the fourth really puts some pressure on the American jet pilots I would think. I'm glad cooler heads prevailed.

Interesting article but it lacks context. This isn't unusual for countries to do to each other. It's pretty common to test a neighbors air defense and tracking capabilities just to see how good they are, and also how good your guys are. The other half of this though is that the Russian Federation has been stepping up these flights and these probes in recent years and months. Could be just a fact of their modernization of their armed forces, or it could be a deliberate poke at the United States. Interesting years to come though, that's for sure.
