The article describes a number of factors that are leading to this waste. I would say end all agricultural supports. Let the free market rule.

In this case we probably made a deal we would take cherries so someone else would take corn or soybeans or something else we produce at a disgustingly high level. Agricultural subsidies aren't the direct problem.

On the topic of subsidies though, there are fantastic farmlands that are used for cow corn. They shouldn't be receiving a subsidy for that. We should require farms actually rotate crops and grow something other than corn to get government money.

We need less grains also. I would rather see 20,000 acres of berry farms than corn

Lots of smaller farmers would be put out of business and larger AG companies would take over since they have the ability, as mentioned in this article, of processing cherries into juice or being able to transport it quickly to market.

The Diary industry would probably look much different than it does now as well, there are so many subsidies there, price controls, and even the USDA pushes dairy products in advertising.

New Zealand did it and it resulted in a stronger agricultural sector.
