The article describes a number of factors that are leading to this waste. I would say end all agricultural supports. Let the free market rule.

In this case we probably made a deal we would take cherries so someone else would take corn or soybeans or something else we produce at a disgustingly high level. Agricultural subsidies aren't the direct problem.

On the topic of subsidies though, there are fantastic farmlands that are used for cow corn. They shouldn't be receiving a subsidy for that. We should require farms actually rotate crops and grow something other than corn to get government money.

We need less grains also. I would rather see 20,000 acres of berry farms than corn

Lots of smaller farmers would be put out of business and larger AG companies would take over since they have the ability, as mentioned in this article, of processing cherries into juice or being able to transport it quickly to market.

The Diary industry would probably look much different than it does now as well, there are so many subsidies there, price controls, and even the USDA pushes dairy products in advertising.

New Zealand did it and it resulted in a stronger agricultural sector.

In the US, we buy all of our corn from Brazil even though half the farmers in the US grows corn. My dad told me it's because the corn grown in the US is feed corn for animals while the corn from Brazil taste better so they sell it in grocery stores for people to eat. Who knows... but the banana thing is weird. A banana is a banana. There's a gas station/store here called Wawa, they sell 4 or 5 different kinds of bananas from different countries in that place. I bought one of each one day and there's no fucking difference. A banana is a banana is a fucking banana. Unless it's from Vermont or Reykjavik, then I would ask questions.

Looks like 40% of corn is used for ethanol production and 36% is used for animal feed.

For regular sweet corn you find in a supermarket it probably depends on the season. If the US has a crop thats in season it'll likely be what you see in your supermarket. But if its out of season in the US the crops from south america will fill the need.

When life gives you 40000 pounds of tart cherries to dump - Make Cherry wine/mead.

Then you have to join the cherry wine brewers association, pay $10,000 in fees and let them limit how much you make. I guess you could render the rest down as industrial alcohol, provided you join the industrial distiller's association...

These associations and groups never end.

Wow. I used to pick cherries at this farm when I was 13 to make a bit of pocket change.

What a waste, I fucking love those cherries.

1995 was Bill Clinton's second year in office. It was his administration that did this. We have a lot of Cherry orchards in this state and in bad years some still go out of business. I think the excuse for doing this is bull shit.
