In America (years ago) civil unions weren't the same as marriages. Or rather, some states would allow civil unions between same-sex couples, but they weren't permitted to take advantage of shared health insurance policies, end of life care, or a bunch of other things. So long as civil union = marriage it doesn't really matter what you call it though.
