I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say in that first sentence, but in America (years ago) civil unions and marriage didn't hold the same legal ramifications. Glad to know it's not this way in Australia. They really have no reason to protest or bitch then.

I don't see why any government feels it is their place to tell anyone who they want to be with, but that is just me. I tend to favor government that stays out of everyone's personal business.

In America (years ago) civil unions weren't the same as marriages. Or rather, some states would allow civil unions between same-sex couples, but they weren't permitted to take advantage of shared health insurance policies, end of life care, or a bunch of other things. So long as civil union = marriage it doesn't really matter what you call it though.
