No. It is would be more of a case of semantics. All of the wedded partnerships are civil unions, it is the church that called it marriage. As most legal and court systems were based, in the old days, on religious systems, the name stuck.
I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say in that first sentence, but in America (years ago) civil unions and marriage didn't hold the same legal ramifications. Glad to know it's not this way in Australia. They really have no reason to protest or bitch then.
I don't see why any government feels it is their place to tell anyone who they want to be with, but that is just me. I tend to favor government that stays out of everyone's personal business.
