It's the strangest thing. The people that like Marvel are not the transgenders and SJWs of the world.. There might be a 2% crossover. Why would Marvel attempt to cater to such a tiny market when they should swing the axe the same way the struck gold the first time? They need to focus on what made the original superhero comics/movies popular to begin with. That organic fascination with "superpowers" and "superheroes" that sprung an entire industry into the billion dollar enterprise it is today.

There are agenda pushers everywhere, and you need to be vigilant to be aware of when one is attempting to lead you somewhere. This comic was an obvious attempt of agenda pushing that it borders on being repugnant, even by the standards of the 2%.

My theory is that since a good deal of the millennials are characterized as "progressive", marketers foolishly try to cater to them ignoring that:

  • The number of millennials that actually care for this ideology is smaller than they realize.

  • Millennials have considerably less consuming power than previous generations.

  • The old business models they keep defending is part of the reason why they have so many problems adjusting to the internet age and reaching their audiences.

  • The creatively bankrupt industry can't create quality and fresh content to attract new consumers... or even keep the old ones.

  • They think virtue signaling is a win-win game with no potential for backfire.

I'm a liberal but progressivism is filled with virtue signaling whores that tokenize minorities. And if I object to these shitty representation then I'm called a racist.

Progressivism is a lose-lose scenario. Minorities don't want to be tokenized. Minorities don't represent the primary purchasing demographic. The majority does not appreciate being falsely accused of bigotry if they dislike something.

marketers foolishly try to cater to them ignoring that:

This is why i believe that we are about to see another tech bubble burst.

A lot of the conclusions that we have seen are based on poorly conceived analytical models made by silicone valley companies. Now it may be possible that they are pushing an agenda, but i have another suspicion:

They received Indian"answers" to American problems. They are overly dependent on h1b visas and offshore indian based companies, yet they have no clue that only 36% of those guys can write useful code.

So all these industries that depended on marketing analytics from silicon valley: Retail, movies, comics, politics and AAA games are getting burned by this. Eventually they will figure out that these analytic services suck and stop giving them money.

I am not sure who will be first: snapchat, instagram, or twitter. I know facebook is soon. They don't have a dislike button, so how the fuck can they determine if a user likes or hates something?

They even ruined that old saying, because "forest" wasn't inclusive enough. Now Smokey says "Only you can prevent wild fires".

No the reason their stories resonate so well is because they follow the archtype of the hero. Its the story of man just retold.

Marvel is not promoting racial equality. They are just offering a safe space for racists. It's so weird that it doesn't sell to the readers who are being attacked...

I thought this was a good comment:

"I wouldn't call the direction Marvel took as 'Diversity', a more accurate name would be 'racial propaganda'. All the hero characters are Mary-Sue levels of author wish-fulfillment, and the villains are evil for the sake of it whilst loudly announcing their political affiliations that coincidentally are the opposite of the writer. You could make the villain a sack of straw with a frowny-face paper mask and a 'I'm a republican' badge attached, and there wouldn't be much of a difference."

Until roughly a decade ago, 13% of Avengers have been black which is roughly the same proportion of the US.

However, despite already showing diversity, Marvel a few years ago felt it necessary to kill off all white male heroes and give those mantels to minorities.

  • Wolverine is a girl
  • Thor is a girl
  • Iron-Man is a black girl
  • Captain Marvel is a girl
  • Hawkeye is a girl
  • Star-Lord is a girl
  • Hulk is Asian
  • Nova is hispanic
  • Captain America is black
  • Spider-Man is a black Hispanic, and possibly gay.

That's not diversity, that's white male genocide.

Notable mentions :

  • Ms Marvel is now muslim
  • Spider Woman is now an unwed single mother

Thor is a girl

That's pants-on-head retarded. What if somebody made a comic about Athena or Artemis as a FUCKING WHITE MALE?

With the other instances, at least they're defacing their own creations. But Thor is based on a Norse god; there isn't any wiggle room there.

That's the thing that gets me. Diversity doesn't mean that if you have one white super-group you have to have one black, one Asian, one Trans, one gender-questioning, etc. It means you fairly reflect the culture in which you are operating, and don't show bias to a particular group.

If only 4 superheroes in 30 are black, you've accurately reflected your readership. Anything more than that is an editorial point of view. And when you put forward an editorial point of view, people will agree or disagree with it. If you are a for-profit enterprise (Marvel), when they disagree, then your sales drop.

Comics are sometimes used as a way to get kids interested in reading. It would be cool if, instead of having The Gay Issue or The Trans Issue, they made comics that could be used in schools for educational purposes. Like having the same images, but using less/more advanced vocabulary depending on the age group. Maybe have some sort of time travelling superhero who goes to different historical moments... And maybe he happens to meet someone who is queer, or a working woman in the 1950s, or some "other" person, but they are just people instead of one-dimentional agenda-pushers.

Seriously... It's a concept. There have been other times where concepts have been anthropomorphized in Marvel and DC for that matter but it's never been this abstract.

The team was basically fighting against property owners to have the right to renovate and replace their property. Maybe if more blacks would own the property where they live, gentrification would not be such a big issue.

Gizmodo writer Charles Pulliam-Moore takes issue with Marvel’s business decision, to opine how the publisher was cancelling the only mainstream comic featuring a “majority-black” (a misnomer) cast of characters. Describing it as a “bad look” for Marvel, the writer says the publisher should have considered “more thoughtful approaches” instead of cancelling the underperforming title.

Pulliam-Moore argues that the comic book industry “needs to change in order to sustain itself and cultivate new readers,” and insists that stories like The Crew “deserve to be told,” but offers no solution for “culturally relevant” comics that just don’t sell.

Typical attitude. Not only should companies pander to bullshit SJW politics, they should do it for free or even at a loss. This is where SJWs get a rude awakening to reality. It's easy for companies to trot out progressive politics, but they will pursue profit above all else if they want to continue to exist. These aren't government propaganda bureaus that will be funded no matter what. They have to give the people what they want, or perish. SJWs have taken for granted that corporations are on their side, but in reality they just go where the money is. Yeah, some companies have insane leftists managing them, but the market is the final decider. Marvel may put out some propaganda, but if people aren't buying it, eventually they're going to have to cut it loose.

But why expect Marvel to do this anyway? Why not create a comic like this and sell it independently? Because this is 100% about the agenda and 0% about the art. Marvel has a huge mainstream following, built on real comics created by truly talented people. This is about leeching off of the success of others to push blatant propaganda. That's what I find most despicable about SJWs trying to pressure successful people and companies to push their message. They don't have the talent or ability to build these platforms themselves, so they will parasitically attach themselves to something that's already successful.

I like the bit about how the industry needs to change to sustain itself. I used to spend a good $30-80 a week in comics, but it was this change in the form of pandering and hiring sit writers which turned me off. Now I'll only buy a couple trades a month and usually smaller indie stuff since they seems to be the only ones left with any degree of passion or originality.

I can't imagine how abysmal the sales must have been for them to cancel it only after two issues. They must have sold copies in the single digits.

Just as a comparison, that Squirrel Girl abomination with shitty art and explaining to Galactus about pronouns lasted longer.

The leadership in many of these companies would crawl through broken glass to virtue signal about how progressive they are, so the sales absolutely would have to be pathetic beyond belief.

It's hard to understand who the market for this is. I'm sure there's some normal nerdy black dudes who like comics, but I doubt they want to get artificially preached at about race while trying to enjoy some entertainment.

[–] library_of_stupid 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

It gets even better.

Christopher Priest’s original run of The Crew in 2003 performed similarly poorly, and was canceled after just seven issues. Like Coates’ new effort, Priest’s run was also made up of non-white superheroes who took on gentrification in New York City.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

I think it's more like the marketing firms and departments would do that.

The actual Execs as we saw with the VP care about the hard numbers. It's why they keep starting but canceling these runs. Marketing says this will sell, it does not and is then canceled. If it was the high up Execs then I'd expect these runs to keep going in spite of the low sales.
