They didn't. Engineering / science license and accreditation boards are a well established common way to ensure professionalism, ethical behavior, and skills. The idea being when someone says "yeah sure that will work" and then fails to work you don't have to wait for until it breaks or someone gets hurt before finding out they are bullshitting.

This is a case of someone wanting to get an easy win against someone who annoyed them.

Tap the breaks, you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

This guy did some pro-bono work and sent it over. They had three choices:

  • Ignore it. Some random guy sent them something unsolicited so they could just toss it.
  • Investigate it. They shouldn't believe some random guy on the Internet, but it might be true, so send it over to the staff engineer to review and see if it's real.
  • Strap on your jack boots and goose step over to his house and Shut Him Down.

They chose facism.

Moreover, licensing is mainly necessary for public facing jobs. When you go to a doctor, a lawyer, etc you want to be sure this person you just met is qualified. Most engineers are not public facing, unless they are private contractors. Most are employed by corporations who judge their employees by results, not accreditations. As such, 98% of the engineers I've worked with haven't been liscenced.

Source: I've been employed as an engineer for a decade. Despite getting top marks on my FE, I've yet to take the PE exam because it isn't necessary.

Tap the breaks yourself for a second there and reread my comment. Pay attention to the last line because we are of the same opinion here, I just doubt its some lefty liberal thats doing this. Its a system that is open to abuse allowing someone to apply the law to the letter without any notion of the spirit of the law.

This is quite clearly a a case of someone trying to fuck over this guy and using rules meant to protect the public from expensive hazardous mistakes to do it. Its fuckery, fuckery probably put in place to protect a union more than the public, its just not liberalist facism fuckery.

Source: Member of Engineers Ireland, I wouldn't get fined but I'd get into a bit of bother if I went around calling myself an engineer or even a technician outside of my job title without meeting the criteria and formally applying to be recognized as such (4 years employed or else employed as engineer / technician, recognized diploma for technician and a BS in engineeering for engineer).

You think "accredited" engineers never make mistakes or something? That an "accredited" engineer never designed something that caused people to die?
