This is because the government is run by "civil servants". As Heinlein pointed out: "In a mature society, 'civil servant' is semantically equal to 'civil master'."

... Wow, they were worried about terrorists switching over to couriers? What kind of an idiot WOULDN'T use a courier for sensitive information that could feasibly be carried by one?

And they were worried about encryption? This is how easy it is to encrypt something.

A 5 57 9 A 93 8 22 A 90 34 1

There, that is encrypted. Moreover, it is encryption that cannot be broken in any reasonable amount of time (as in, more time than you can humanly imagine). Simple. Anyone could do it.

These fears are ridiculous. They are so absurd, that I find them to be unbelievable. Only a gullible target audience could take these "fears" seriously.

Every day, I look out my window and see terrorists, terrorists everywhere. You see that kid with a passcode on his phone? Actually a violent 600 year old Islamist and a terrorist. Only the TSA can stop them, they are America's one and only hope.

That reminded me of this Key & Peele sketch.

Or a target audience that wants to believe the lie that is being told to them.

The comments there are so bitter. It's as if the Internet is where a person goes to act like they've been bitter for the past 5 hours.

Techdirt has been chronicling a lot of shady corporation and government activity for a long time. Their readership is decidedly bitter because of it. It's hard to stay optimistic after years of seeing abuses and chilling effects.
