Another possibly difference between the two cases is the strength of the evidence. If this guy confessed when being interviewed then the prosecutors would have had no reason to offer a plea bargain (even though the case came down to his word against theirs), so he got a full sentence.
With Epstein the prosecutors decided the evidence wasn't strong, so they offered a plea bargain and a negotiated sentence.
