It's not that strange. If you have an old animal that's in pain and you care about it then you would try anything to alleviate it.
Idk if it worked but I'm sure it didn't hurt. I give my dog massages, brush her teeth, rinse her eyes and clean her ears everyday. I might look into acupuncture.

I think it's strange because I have never heard of acupuncture being used on animals.
Apparently it's common enough for a Wikipedia article.
