Dan Rather used to be an excellent reporter: honest and brave. Then he took a job as a talking head, essentially under the terms of "people believe you because of your reputation, we want to use that now, so you'll say what you're told". So when he fell off his perch, he had it coming.

The incident about the fake document about Bush going AWOL was a classic con. Because that bit of Bush's past was a huge embarrassment, faking a document which told the truth, publicizing it, then with much fanfare revealing that that particular document was fake did the trick.

However, the news itself wasn't fake. The fake was the document which Rather waved in front of the camera. Bush went AWOL. Rather sold out. Both should have had to own up.

For a real reporter, if the evidence is fake the news is fake. It doesn't matter what he may have felt the truth to be. The standards that journalists are supposed to follow require that they have and properly vet evidence that supports the claims they are making. It is different from a comment on the internet. Getting a story right(it if was right) by coincidence isn't good enough.

And he was never a good reporter. Nor was this the first time. Should do some googling about Steve Southards, who claimed to be a 16-year-old Navy SEAL and pulled the wool over his eyes long long ago in another situation where he wanted something to be true more that he wanted to be act as a journalist. It was his own listen and believe Rolling Stonesque story where even the most basic amount of research would have revealed the truth.

Plenty of solid evidence that Bush went AWOL, e.g. the testimony of his CO. One piece, but a juicy piece, that wasn't solid. It's what Rather chose to present, because it seemed to require no further work on his part.

As for him being a good journalist, he started out as a war reporter, got out there on the pointy end, told it like it was. When offered a lot of money to become a talking head, a network shill, he got lazy, quit thinking.

People who get so lazy they quit thinking deserve whatever happens to them.

Oh, so he lied for for the right reasons which were really the truth but there was no evidence so they faked it.

Wow you're stupid.

More complicated than that. Try reading through again; if that doesn't work, give up.

I posted a cool article about a typewriter expert who forensically figured out how the documents were faked if you're interested. (Plus it's shameless promotion for the /v/Typewriters sub).
