It's almost insulting to continue calling that place Reddit, given everything Aaron Swartz went through.

I think it's great to call it pao's Reddit. It isn't Reddit anymore. It isn't the people's anymore. It's their sick bastardization of it.

Pao has some power but is still just an interim CEO. They're being driven by their board of directors down this road. I think Pao is along for the ride while putting her stamp on certain things like discrimination and SRS support.

Yeah "sanitized" is the best way to put it, the site feels like Pinterest now. I made an account here in February when I first noticed Ellen Pao threads disappearing from the front page with thousands of comments/upvotes. Then I deleted my reddit accounts on the 10th as soon as I saw the ban announcements.

It wasn't just Ellen Pao threads either. I would see something at work and try to go back to it when I got home and its gone! It kept happening more and more. Threads that were at the top with hundreds of comments.

I was so confused when that started happening to me.

What bugged me is they selectively deleted dissenting comments and allowed comments that defended Pao. I feel like its a more sinister form of censorship used primarily for control.

Earlier this month it was also revealed that Pao had banned salary negotiations at Reddit partly because she believed they disadvantaged women.

Wow. What the ever-loving fuck. Didn't hear about this at all. Wonder why that might be.

Clearly she thinks women suck at negotiating. How sexist of her.

[–] Luckyberries 0 points 12 points (+12|-0) ago

Its disgusting for me to know she does not believe I can negotiate better than my male counter parts and I need to be 'protected' . There's ALWAYS someone out there better than you at any given thing. So if they're good at negotiating then good for them, let them have a higher pay, they took the risk they should be rewarded!

[–] cynoclast 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

She did say "women don't do as well" which is the same concept, but spun to sound like a good thing.

It's actually sexist towards women, and will cause them to miss out on top talent because people can get paid more elsewhere where they're allowed to use their negotiation skills.

[–] Anonymice 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

But it's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Women tend to be far less likely to take risks than men, and women are far less likely to negotiate their salaries than men.

In a way, that's pretty fucking brilliant. She's essentially the liberal equivalent of Ronald Reagan except instead of using religion to frame her ideology, she's using sjw's with her rally cry of "misogyny" when in reality it's just anti-labor.

She was discriminating against women she had worked with in the past as well, amid a bunch of other controversy.

I feel like all of these articles have missed what is, for me at least, the point. It's not censorship, that's a benign labelling of what happened.

Censorship would imply some criteria upon which people were being silenced. Rules and so on.

Silencing one group because you don't like them, while allowing groups like SRS to remain, who violated the same spirit of the alleged reason for silencing the first group is censorship, but more so it's persecution.

For me the major bother is, Pao is quite blatantly engaged in the exact same fucking behavior she's citing as the impetus for the ban. The utter hypocrisy and abject lack of self reflection are more than I can stand.

I'm sure there are backroom deals to have soda and junk food ads masquerade as user generated content.

Doesn't even have to be that. Fatties and more broadly SJW-type users are perfect consumers. They have poor impulse control and as a result are a lot more likely to spend money on pointless bullshit without thinking first. Additionally who is a better media consumer - a tumblr user who'll spend their parents' money on every new piece of content and merchandise or a stereotypical redditor who would rather torrent everything than pay for it?

Came here thinking the same.

We keep seeing these articles regurgitating the same story ad nauseam.

Where are the hard numbers in term of traffic?

[–] kevinstonge 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago  (edited ago)

reddit has over 100,000,000 unique visitors per month. Voat has about 100,000.

So unfortunately, the numbers are of a "drop in the bucket" magnitude. But remember, we don't want Voat to get too big, because when you have 100 million eyeballs looking at something, people with money will see dollar signs and want to control what those 100 million people are looking at!

Well I guarantee that voat is seeing more users... Like me for instance.

However most of them are probably not leaving Reddit yet so how can you REALLY determine if there has been an active drop over there? You can't look at user accounts because they won't get deleted just not used. Perhaps "active accounts currently online" at various parts of the day/week?

I doubt even those would REALLY be impacted because the average reddit user doesn't even have an account. You would have to just look at pure traffic #'s and the vast majority of them aren't even going to know anything happened because they just come to browse meme's on the front page and maybe scan the news subreddits. I know people who have been on there for years and never created an account or posted a single comment.

I'm in what I think is a reasonably good sized group, the group of people on Voat, but not leaving Reddit yet. My participation is dropping there, as are my page views, but I'm sure there are a lot people like me with new accounts here that'll slowly migrate instead of leaving outright.

It's been hard to leave reddit because there are still some great subs that I loved. But I can't be a part of the site anymore. I'm done with Reddit until Pao is gone.

"We are not ready for such a huge influx of new users and haven't prepared for such a large and sudden increase either."

Sounds like Reddit during the Digg exodus. Best of luck to the admins.
