Were you doing regular checks on your tires for air pressure, tread wear, and rubber condition? I'd be shocked if the tire wasn't showing some symptoms before failure.

It was a dark and foggy night on the Devil's Highway, just south of San Francisco. The tire was excised from the rim by traumatic collision with a drainage culvert (about 12 inches in diameter), cleverly disguised as road surface. The impact pulled my car into the mountain side, scraping anything resembling an automobile from the passenger side of the vehicle. The choices were to stop forward momentum and risk death on the highway or to continue on while risking death on the highway but closer to home. Maintenance issues had little or nothing to do with the incident, unless we consider the soul and psyche of the pilot.
