I think it's less about women in particular and more about this politically correct culture we all find ourselves living in that leads to one "crying when criticized.
It's unfortunate that he was forced to resign, our society should separate an individual's work from his/her politics or his/her less than favorable opinions. His questionably sexist comment will amount to more news coverage than his scientific achievement, and that is the sad reality of the world we live in. Sensationalist controversy triumphs over scientific discovery every time... its driven by passion and much simpler to comprehend.

The worst part is that, whether or not his comment is right or wrong, is irrelevant to the public eye.
It's disgusting that people will take any comments that are at all negative towards their general populous, and take great offense, as well as create and unneeded uproar. Let sleeping dogs lie. If you disagree, be vocal, tell them you do, but don't force them into resignation.
