Do people generally not know what usurp means nowadays?

I thought it was the opposite of 'slurp'. Like, slowly dribbling your drink back into your glass in a clumsy manner. To me, usurping a throne always seemed a really messy and inefficient means of assuming control. I just figured it was some weird shit the aristocracy had to perform as a matter of tradition and family honor.

I hear the term used in sports and I'm not much of a sports fan.
