Doesn't that say more about poverty than our tax structure? It seems silly to tax people that are broke. Plus, you have to take into account that some states have income tax, too. I have a part time job @ $9.75/hr. I pay $0 federal income tax, but a few hundred to NY state.
You realize that actual poverty (as strictly defined and used to track economic progress / compare countries) was eliminated long ago in the US, right? That's why Obama tried (did? It's been a few years, so I don't remember what the end result was) to redefine poverty as a percentage of all income earners, so that government programs to "fight poverty" would always grow.
