While I am encouraged that there is more activity here on Voat than before, I also hope that the quality of the posters remains high as well. That is one of the major issues with Reddit, in that you have to actively search for quality subs and quality comments.

I was going to say the same thing. There are so many articles on this right now, most of them characterizing Voat without bothering to look at it. I'm not here from the FPH incident. I'm here because Voat doesn't have power hungry mods censoring everything. : D

I know, most of the articles I have seen say that all of the people who hated fat people left to Voat and say that Voat is going to just be full of reddit "shitlords." That also seems to be a popular opinion on Reddit too. So far I have not encountered any bad users and I have been posting a lot today.

All the people from /r/fatpeoplehate are on /v/fatpeoplehate, and not in the wild.

Not to mention shills leading the course of nearly every serious discussion.

I have always had this idea of rotating mods meaning no sub should ever have a permanent admin forever with ultimate power to manipulate posts for a specific agenda. Here's an outline of what I thought about (but never stated) in regards to what happened at /r/technology a while ago:

  1. Admins of subs which have more than X subscribers should have rotating admins chosen by a poll;
  2. Only subscribers in that sub can vote for an admin;
  3. No one should remain admin for longer than X months (I suggest 4 months)
  4. As the sub grows more admins are needed. A new position is created if the ratio of admin to user is less than y:x (for example: 1:5000)
  5. and this is important: if users of a sub feel an admin is inadequate, oppressive, agenda pusher, etc. they can have a referendum if the number of opposers>x%
  6. admins should follow some rules, no admin should be allowed to ban a user a delete a post without reason based on rules

I came here a couple days ago and I'll admit, the FPH incident sparked it. Its been a long time coming for me though. I got tired of reddit back in 2012 and started going to the smaller boards on 4chan but even then, I felt like it was missing something. Reddit was such a great place 5-6 years ago and I'm hoping that we can have that same quality here. I don't think it's this mass exodus everyone keeps saying, but maybe it will be just enough to keep it somewhat small and have a good community.

I feel ya. I missed the days where novelty accounts are highly entertaining and witty. I'm referring to the time of bozarking, the writer guy -- noir or something, and others. There were also lesser memes at that time. Now, Reddit's full of memes and recycled content -- kinda disappointing. Im glad to be here! DIGGxodus 2.0

I thought the FPH revolution showed how corrupted even the most innocent of places can become. I hope the same doesn't happen here.

I came over because I'm actually sick of seeing it now, day after day it gets worse and worse. I'll still keep up to date with the happenings but I don't see anything being reverted.

I think the kind that migrate because of censorship are most likely better members than those who don't care about censorship.

Yeah, just came over. Not a FPH member but I am not fan of censorship. I hope to make the magic subreddit here more active.

Well, voat is DEFINITELY going to have much more fat people bashing. So it has that going for it?

[–] lastdeadmouse 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

If the fat people bashing is in a fat people bashing subverse, how bad could it be for the rest of it? To me, the best thing about reddit was that it wasn't tumblr, and now the best thing about voat is, it isn't tumblr or Reddit.

Reddit is turning into North Korea where everyone is chubby.

They wish. Only the government is chubby, everyone else is starving. :/

I just hope this won't become a second 9gag where all cool stuff are taken directly from reddit

[–] ducttape83 0 points 15 points (+15|-0) ago

in 2009, a lot of reddit stuff came from digg. And before that, a lot of digg stuff came from fark. It's the cycle of social news communities on the internet. If we get reddit's reposts, that just means that it's one less thing that I need to go to reddit for

The subs I've been on (mostly programming) are all full with the top reddit posts of each week. But I will stay because I know growth will spark more oc

[–] porn_unicorn 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Just exporing subverses today I've encountered about as much oc to repost/xpost as a normal day on reddit, voat just lacks in numbers for now.

[–] anonymous 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago  (edited ago)

are you seriously getting mad at the fact that 9gag stole content that reddit stole from 4chan and other websites? reddit is a link aggregator, they produce next to no OC. getting mad about people "stealing" content from reddit is just ironic when the whole point of the website was to post other peoples stuff you found on the internet

[–] silver_nuke13 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Not when 9gag pretends they are the ones who invented the content (watermarking stuff that isn't theirs lol), or the ones who found it originally (faking timestamps to appear older than reddit's, to give the illusion that reddit stole from 9gag), or when they pretend they invented most of the memes they use (which is why 4chan raided them years ago, they even fooled some 9gaggers to DDoS their own servers thinking they were 4chan's)

Keep your ignorance to yourself, mongrel

I don't see it happening - for the most part. I think most people here want to put as much space between us as possible.

I have to admit, my first impulse was to see what was going on, on Reddit. I am going cold turkey and not looking back. Shit I've quit smoking, I can quit a website

I'm still on reddit at the moment (I actually have it open in another tab) but I'm trying to wean myself onto voat. Once the servers are less laggy then I'll try to phase reddit out, but I'm so invested in that site that it's gonna be damn near impossible.

I've had an account here for a while, but almost literally nothing was happening in the subs I'm interested in. Now I'm spamming deserted subs, trying to kickstart activity.

Welcome! I deleted Reddit sync today, which I averaged 7 GB of data a month on. I'm ready to sacrifice community size for quality and a chance to build new ones. It's like new game+!

I never visited the FPH sub, and I still had comments removed from another sub that simply mentioned the name of the Reddit CEO. The censorship over there is out of control. I would rather wade through some shitposts than to constantly have the thought police riding my ass.

Reddit really screwed the pooch on this. The idiot in charge doesn't seem to realize that users made the site, and they can (and will) move on.

[–] SpaceMonkey 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

She might argue the lost users are the ones they don't want on the site anyway.

[–] RobotChicken 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

The collateral damage is massive. It isn't just ~150k users subsribed to the site, there was many more lurkers including me. But the main thing is breaking trust. I don't believe them anymore and it will go just downhill from there.

[–] journalistsarelazy 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago  (edited ago)

I might also argue that it's better to keep users than having to find new ones which is arguably harder.

I have got to admit it. It is just plain FUN! to dance on Reddit's grave and take a big dump on its headstone.

So far I like voat, it's nice starting from something new. It's very much the same as Reddit, but with a new slate and some interesting new rules.
